How does Fiber Optics Work?

Fiber optics is a technology that uses thin strands of glass or plastic to send data in the form of light pulses. These pulses travel through the fibers, bouncing off the walls due to total internal reflection. This allows data to be sent long distances at super-fast speeds.

The light pulses go through refraction while moving through the fiber optic cables. When transitioning from one medium to another, like from air to glass, the light changes direction. This refraction happens multiple times in each strand, keeping the light inside and avoiding loss of signal.

The key part of fiber optics is the core. That's where the light moves. It's wrapped in a layer called the cladding, which has a lower refractive index than the core. The cladding helps keep total internal reflection by sending back any escaped light into the core.

Fiber optics has the ability to carry lots of data at the same time using different light wavelengths. This technique is called wavelength division multiplexing (WDM). It lets many signals travel through one fiber without interference.
