Data centres started out as privately owned facilities housing traditional IT infrastructure for the exclusive use of one company. They are also known as enterprise, or on-premises data centres. Today, the infrastructure has shifted more to cloud data centres, also called hyperscale data centres. These are mostly run by cloud service providers (CSPs). Due to the growing demand for data, cloud services and AI, higher speed, reliability and lower latency is needed. The efficiency of the cabling infrastructure plays a key role, it relies heavily on the quality of the installation and the integrity of the cables and connections. Various cable types are used, from copper to fibre optic. This depends on the equipment’s requirements, the functional area of the data centre, and the overall system design. These cables need to be inspected, cleaned, tested, characterised and certified to prove reliability and compliance against international standards. Data performance relies not only on the cables, but also on the servers, switches and other equipment. 

The end-to-end signal integrity of the transmission, and the bit error rate specifications of links always need to be validated. Service disruptions need to be avoided as much as possible, and energy consumption is a growing challenge with the rise of AI.
