OTDRs
OTDRs (optical time domain reflectometers) are tools for assessing the integrity of fibre optic cables. They locate the faults by analysing the fibre.
Faults such as breaks, bends, and splices can be identified by measuring loss and reflectance. Within our portfolio we have OTDRs for conducting tests on the different variants of fibre, such as multimode (MM) and singlemode (SM). We also have OTDRs that are able to perform both the singlemode and multimode tests, this is the QUAD version (MM+SM). As well as the wavelengths, another important specification is the dynamic range. We stock OTDRs from all the major brands such as EXFO, VIAVI and Fluke. We offer models for the certification of enterprise, to FTTx/PON as well as long-haul networks. From the most basic fibre certification to fully automated bi-directional OTDR testing. We also have optional solutions such as live fibre troubleshooting, or auto-detection and identification of PON splitter types. Our lab engineers have many years of experience. As well as the fact that RentalTec is an EXFO authorised customer repair centre and a VIAVI authorised service centre. We have the know-how and training provided by the vendors themselves for repairs and calibrations. This enables us to make sure we are always able to deliver an optimised level of quality.

Frequently asked questions about OTDRs
-
Yes. RentalTec offers a large selection of OTDRs for rent across Europe, available for short, medium, and long-term rental periods starting from seven days. We stock singlemode (SM), multimode (MM), and QUAD (SM+MM) OTDRs from EXFO, VIAVI, Fluke, Anritsu, Intec, and AEM. Every OTDR is fully tested, calibrated, and delivered with all required accessories including launch cables and fibre inspection tools, so you are ready to start testing immediately.

We stock OTDRs from all major manufacturers including EXFO (MaxTester 730C, 730D series), VIAVI (SmartOTDR, T-BERD/MTS series), Fluke (OptiFiber Pro), Anritsu (MW90010B Coherent OTDR), Intec (Argus F300), and AEM. Our inventory covers everything from basic fibre certification OTDRs to high-dynamic-range models for long-haul networks and specialized units for live fibre troubleshooting and PON testing.
-
Yes. Renting OTDRs is one of the most cost-effective approaches for FTTH rollout and fibre-to-the-home deployment projects. FTTH contractors typically need OTDRs for the duration of a specific rollout phase rather than permanently, making rental significantly cheaper than purchasing. RentalTec stocks OTDRs with PON testing capabilities, filtered wavelengths for live fibre testing, and high dynamic ranges suited for FTTx certification. We also carry complementary fibre testing equipment such as optical power meters, light sources, fibre inspection kits, and CD/PMD analysers, so you can rent a complete FTTH test kit.
-
Yes. RentalTec is headquartered in Duffel, Belgium and delivers OTDRs across Europe with typical delivery times of 24 to 48 hours. We have offices in Belgium, Germany, the United Kingdom, and France, with local support available in Dutch, German, French, and English. Whether you need an OTDR for a fibre project in Belgium, the Netherlands, or anywhere else in Europe, you can request a quote from your local RentalTec office and receive the equipment quickly.

A singlemode (SM) OTDR tests singlemode fibre, which is used in most long-distance and FTTx networks. A multimode (MM) OTDR tests multimode fibre, commonly found in enterprise and data centre environments. A QUAD OTDR combines both singlemode and multimode testing in one unit, which is useful when you work on mixed-fibre networks or need flexibility across different project types. RentalTec stocks all three variants, and our team can advise you on which configuration matches your project requirements.
-
Yes. Unlike some rental providers, RentalTec delivers OTDRs with all the accessories you need to start testing immediately. This includes launch cables (available in various connector types such as SC/APC, LC/APC, LC/PC, FC/PC), fibre inspection tools, and carrying cases. We stock launch cables from Fibrain in both 500m and 1000m lengths, with a wide range of connector combinations. If your project requires a specific configuration, let us know when requesting your quote.
-
Yes. RentalTec operates an in-house service centre and is an authorized EXFO customer repair centre and VIAVI authorized service centre. We repair and calibrate OTDRs from both manufacturers to factory standards, using vendor-certified procedures and training. This service is available for our rental fleet as well as OTDRs that you own. If your OTDR needs servicing, you can submit a request through our RMA process on the repair and calibration page.

The right OTDR depends on several factors: the type of fibre (singlemode, multimode, or both), the required dynamic range (determined by the length and loss budget of the network), whether you need to test on live fibres (which requires filtered wavelengths), and whether you need PON testing capabilities for FTTx networks. If you are unsure which model fits your project, contact our team with your project details and we will recommend the right OTDR and accessories for your specific requirements.
-
Yes. Our minimum rental period is seven days, and our sliding scale pricing means you only pay for the time you need. This makes OTDR rental ideal for short-term projects such as fibre acceptance testing, network audits, troubleshooting campaigns, or temporary FTTH rollout phases. If your project runs longer than expected, you can extend the rental at any time without penalty and at a lower weekly rate.
-
Yes. We stock OTDR models with built-in PON testing (GPON and XGS-PON), filtered wavelength ports for testing on live networks, and optical inspection (Oi) functionality. For example, the EXFO MaxTester 730C and 730D series are available with 1625nm or 1650nm filtered ports for in-service fibre testing, as well as RF video and optical inspection options. The Intec Argus F300 also offers combined OTDR and GPON/XGS-PON testing. Contact us to discuss which configuration is best for your network type.
