DC power supplies are available as simple benchtop models in compact design. They are also available as high-performance, programmable versions to power automated test equipment (ATE) systems. DC electronic loads are designed to sink current and absorb power, to test energy sources or energy conversion blocks with static or dynamic loading. They are used by device manufacturers and design engineers to test power devices. Examples are power supplies, DC-DC converters, chargers, batteries, solar panels, and fuel cells. Last but by no means least is the source measure unit (SMU) or source meter. The SMU combines the functionality of a power supply, electronic load, voltmeter, and ammeter. The 2 or 4 quadrant architecture can function as a source and sink to simulate batteries or loads. It can be used for battery testing and semiconductor I/V characterisation.
